Making podcasts available in both posts and pages

  • Here’s the issue I’ve been having with multiple MP3 plugins of all kinds. I have three different podcasts in the site that I’m transitioning to WordPress from old-school HTML. Each episode has its own post, and the embedded players show up just fine in the posts. However, when I create a page for each podcast and use a category display plugin like Blog in Blog to pull the posts into that page, the URL for the podcast files shows up as a dead URL with no embedded player. The players I’ve tested all don’t require a shortcode of their own to add the player…they just read the URL on its own line and launch the player.

    Will Powerpress work in this situation, and what do I need to do to make it do what I need it to do?

    You can get faster response for PowerPress issues at the blubrry.com forums, forum.blubrry.com.

    Unfortunately, simply placing a URL to a media file is no longer adequate if you want to truly podcast. You can thank or blame iTunes, but in 2005 they setup some special specifications which, if you want to maximize your coverage on iTunes, you must use.

    What PowerPress adds to your edit screen is a “Episode Entry Box”, which is where you can paste your media URL and then click our ‘Verify’ button, which doubles as a method to check your URL is valid, as well as populate the extra meta data needed for iTunes. This extra meta data is the file size in bytes and the duration in seconds. In addition, you can customize PowerPress to specify specific values for other iTunes attributes, configured in the basic settings tab of PowerPress settings.

    When migrating from an older platform where media URLs are placed in the blog post content, all you need to do is go to the PowerPress Tools page and select “Import episodes from Blogger and other blogging applications”. When you view this page, you will see how it will map media files to each blog post. It adds logic to make sure you only add one media file to a blog post (doing multiple is problematic for iTunes and just about all other podcast catchers). Go to the blubrry forum for more info on this, lots of folks have used this for migrating from static sites, movable type, blogger, typepad, PodPrsss and many other blogging apps.

    We already have a separate hosting provider that handles our iTunes feed and those for other podcast aggregators…what I’m trying to do is make the files also available on our web site and don’t need the iTunes functions there.

    Do the same actions to podcast from PowerPress, just don’t use the provided podcast feeds, and you’ll be all set.

    Over time you may find it’s easier and better to do it all right from your blog, but just using it to on the web site is just as fine. Biggest advantage to doing everything from one place is of course ease of use, but there are other advantages such as the link backs to your own web site (rather than to some other web site to benefit from) and of course, having it all under your own ownership. Many though use services like BlogTalkRadio/Talkshoe and can’t migrate away anyway due to those services terms of service, so they just repost on their blog simply for the web site side of things like what you want to do.
