Making open the link in a new window the default

  • Hi,

    Nice product, I got it up and running in no time.

    I think I saw on the WordPress site setting a link to open in a new window is bad manners or something. However, my blog is mostly a collection of links so it makes sense. Anyway, my question is, is there a way to make ‘open the link in a new window’ the default so I don’t have to set that every time?

    It would not just be a WordPress site where you’d see such an opinion.

    There are all sorts of ways to do this. But a simple plugin option may be:

    I’m curious about that. If you have a site consisting of a monologue with a bunch of links, and you want to follow along, you would have to keep right-clicking and hit open in a new window or tab. I suppose you could just keep hitting the back arrow but then you would lose your place in the blog (I think?). I guess on the ones I read, I prefer to just close the tab and return to the blog.

    True. However, it would be my decision whether to right or left click. And that’s exactly the point!
    The “bad manner” refers to the fact that you want to decide how my browser should behave… ??

    I see. Now that I think about it, it should be possible to create a control where the user could choose between those two behaviors depending on what they wanted. Interesting.

    There is already such a control: The user’s browser.

    If I want to open a link in a new tab, I middle click it. If I don’t, I left click it.

    In fact, I’ve set my copy of Firefox to actually ignore what sites say about the “target”, so that sites cannot do what you’re asking how to do. At least, not to me. But other people don’t know how to do such things, and so you’re making your site very, very annoying for them.

    There is only one case where a site should ever open a new window, and that is when it’s a web application of some sort, and the new window has special properties. If the new window is just a browser window to another site, then it’s extremely annoying.

    Along those same lines, it seems there must be a way for some people to disable your BACK button. I often get engrossed in a web site, click on a link without thinking and it opens in the same window, then I can’t go back. Very frustrating.

    i disagree – there is no right/wrong way here – it’s all personal preference and i highly doubt opening links to external sites in new windows/tabs is ‘extremely annoying’…

    the perfect set up for me?

    – links to external sites open in a new window/tab
    – links to internal pages stay in the current window/tab

    If the link is to an internal post and the internal post redirects to an external site, there should be an option to open in a new window.

    Every link in your blog not in the blog domain will open in a new window but the links in the source page are not changed. It uses javascript.
