Making my website mobile/responsive

    Hello, I’ve just tried a search but I got a bit bogged down in the results. There seemed to be plugins, code hacking and all sorts and I guess by now that as WP is such a friendly platform there is a friendly answer.

    I’m sure this has been discussed to death so no need for full info here, just a pointer to the right place would be fine.

    I’m not a coder. I’m a “add a plugin and configure” kind of user!

    I have a site that has a theme which the theme designers say degrades to mobile neatly. It doesn’t do so particularly well as far as I am concerned.

    I wasn’t going to look at mobile just now but had an incoming sales call that made me think about it.

    I guess that one either sets up another website that is mobile and somehow redirects to it via a plugin…

    …OR I guess that one somehow adds a mobile theme/plugin alongside a regular theme (is that possible?) and configures that plugin/theme combo to show what one wants.

    Is there an idiot’s guide for people that don’t want to get into code but just want to harness the power of wordpress to create a mobile version of their site?

    I’m using the ProPhoto theme from prophoto.com but not the newest version as the version I have has been (thus far) fine for me. I know they’ve done some work on mobile in the latest version but I’m exploring options rather than just buying the latest theme only to find it doesn’t do what I want any more than the last version of the theme did.

    I’m sorry but as you appear to be using a non-WPORG theme, you need to seek support from the theme’s developers – paid or otherwise. We only support themes downloaded from www.remarpro.com here.

    Sorry, esmi. I didn’t realise I was asking a theme specific question.

    I was hoping that I could somehow set up a parallel site with different information (cut down information and different presentation) using WP to host it. And moreover that it was on the same admin panel as my main site.

    These days, yes. What you need to look for is a responsive theme. This is a theme/design that responds to different viewport sizes by altering its display to maximise effective site functionality over a range of devices. Examples of responsive themes include:
    – Twenty Twelve
    – Twenty Thirteen
    – Twenty Fourteen
    – Responsive

    In which case can I ask a slightly different question?

    If I were to design a mobile site specifically for mobiles (so I can stay with the theme I’m using and which I like but have maybe a separate subdomain or .mobi website for mobile) is there some way to re-direct to that neatly when a mobile device comes along? Or is that down to the theme again?

    I think there are still some plugins that might be able to do this but, with the increasing popularity of responsive themes as opposed to secondary sites for mobile devices, I couldn’t say if – or for how long – these plugin would be compatible with the latest version of WordPress. Might be worth a try though.
