• If this becomes the default editor for WordPress, new users will be completely turned off. It feels like a well-intentioned take on Medium or Ghost, but instead of removing features to craft a intuitive, slimmed-down interface, it just hides half of the original WordPress editor’s features in a cog menu and removes the others entirely. I have spent nearly half an hour trying to edit an existing post in it, and have given up in frustration as I cannot keep text selected, I cannot format text easily, I have to switch to HTML in a tiny menu option and once-simple embeds like YouTube have turned into a nightmare, continually shifting between a text URL and the embed itself as I click around the page. I am generally eager to try new things when it comes to software and technology, but there is so much frustration and so few redeeming features here. Gutenberg: No.

  • Can you PLEASE explain how embeds have turned into a nightmare? I’m genuinely interested in this…

Sure, take a look at this video that demonstrates this (and other) problems:

    * Text selection doesn’t work if you select from left to right, but it kind of works when you go right to left or down to up.
    * Whenever I try to move my cursor to an area and then insert or delete text, it instead goes immediately to the top of the post
    * YouTube embeds don’t work, until you copy-and-paste them, and then they suddenly do, but then if you press enter near them then they stop working again.
    * The entire page is super laggy in some circumstances; e.g. if you close the tab then it takes a few seconds to actually close. This doesn’t happen with any other page and the video was recorded on a relatively high-spec pc (core i5, gtx 1080, 16gb ram, etc).

Weird, I have experienced none of those problems, and I have tested Gutenberg kind of extensively – even wrote a 5,000+ word post with no issues at all. Perhaps you’re experiencing a bad combination of Chrome add-ons and WP plugins?

Weird, I’ve tried it in Edge (which I never use and therefore have no add-ons) and see the same behaviour. I’ve also disabled all of the plugins that have anything to do with the editor (e.g. TinyMCE Advanced and ‘Disable Jetpack Contact Form Editor View’, which fixes a bug introduced in the standard editor) and see the same behaviour. The same post works fine in the standard editor, of course, so I’ll just go back to that.
