I changed the default search for this site to Google Search using WP Google Search. It seems to be working but I noticed that when I click on the search icon on the top menu it does not use Google Search.

I am getting emails that state Search Console has identified that your site is affected by 1 Sitelinks search box issues:

I’m currently validating my fix but am concerned that while the search box itself is fixed that I may still get the error because the icon in the menu does not use the right search.

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

WordPress has its own WordPress search engine. WP Google Search plugin does not replace this, it only allows you to insert a Google Search box into your site using a widget or a Shortcode to any location on your page where your theme allows it.
Themes integrate the WordPress own search box quite specifically and uniquely, each Theme in a different way. You have two options if you don’t want to use WP search and Google search in parallel:

    1. the simpler solution is to hide the WordPress search box inserted by your Theme and place the Google search engine somewhere on your page with a Widget or Shortcode. You can paste Google Search box anywhere where your Theme allows you to paste a Widget or Shortcode.
    2. the more complex solution is for a WordPress designer to specifically integrate the Google Search box into your Theme, thus replacing the WordPress search box in the header with the Google Search box. Ask your site designer about this.

Thank you but it is not the search box I’m having trouble with. I’ve already replaced the default search box with a Google Search box. What I’m trying to do is to either find a plugin or the code to have the search icon in the menu use Google search.

The search box is in the sidebar. I have just an icon in the menu.

Ok, you will even need to click on a search icon (magnifying glass) in your theme to bring up the WordPress search box. But the task has not changed, the WP default search box used by your them needs to be replaced with the Google search box (where it appears by clicking on the icon). There is no general solution for this because it is theme specific. If you have a site designer, you can ask him to change this basic behavior of the search box when you click on the icon.

Actually, I had already disabled the default search and installed Google Search. I didn’t need to do anything with the search icon. Google confirmed that the error was gone even though it appears that the search icon still brings up the non-Google search.
