This might be a conflict with another plugin on the site. If possible, can you disable plugins and see if the same problem happens? Sometimes it also helps to try it while using one of the default themes like “twentyfifteen”.

Sometimes, you can also find error messages in the site’s error log — often, this is available through the hosting company’s control panel. (Some only keep a short time period of logs, so you might need to look at the log after the next time you see the issue.)

It could also be a javascript error — usually this is from a conflict with other plugins as well, but it may help show what the problem is. You can see javascript errors in your browser by opening the javascript console. If you’re not familiar with the console, we have instructions here:
Open the JavaScript console for troubleshooting plugins

This is the type of error I’m getting from javascript:

Failed to load resource: the server responded with a status of 404 (Not Found)

    Mike,

Thanks — I’ll report that error to the dev team (it’s a missing country flag icon), but unfortunately, I don’t think that is the reason for the slow response.

Were you able to find the site’s error log, or test for the same issue with other plugins disabled, and one of the default themes?

Also, do you have a lot of IPs blocked? If you have a very large number blocked, it might just be due to delays at the host (especially on shared hosting).

One other item you can check is logging in to your site using a different browser — for example, if using Internet Explorer or Firefox, try Chrome and see if the same issue happens. (This might not be a permanent solution unless you find that you like using the other browser, but this could help narrow down the issue too.)
