Make field required when only 1 star

In addition to this, how would it be possible to hide the field until the rating has been placed. Make the field hidden unless a 1 star selection has been made.

Is this possible?

You’d have to use some custom javascript to do that by listening for the change event on the hidden SELECT in the rating field.
