Make #_EVENTLINK open modal view

Is it possible to tweak the em-event.php file so that the placeholder #_EVENTLINK opens the modal preview (as when you click on events in the large calendar), instead of opening the event page? I have spent several hours to understand the code, but now I’m giving up.
