Hi. I installed via the WordPress admin the latest version of Jetpack. It has taken me all day to realise that my site has been displaying an error 500 message when you try to visit the homepage. https://www.thathelps.co.uk I now think I have found out the cause of my problems.

the error 500 seems to be caused by some problem in my theme. So I have deleted the theme and set it to Twenty Thirteen. That solved the error 500. The next problem is I cannot deactivate Jetpack. I cannot access the widgets section of my WordPress admin and I am given an error 500 if I try to access my widgets.

I have had to manually delete the Jetpack plugin via ftp as I cannot delete nor deactivate via the WordPress admin area. I am using WordPress 3.6 and the latest version of Jetpack.

For now I have reverted to an old theme that is working. I am really not sure If I am doing something wrong. Everything was working perfectly until I updated Jetpack and then to make things worse I updated WordPress also which has stopped my theme from working. Can you help me?

Hi. I discovered that my problems were due to a server error and actually nothing to do with Jetpack OR WordPress so problem now resolved.

It was just coincidence that I had updated Jetpack and WordPress when the error occurred.

    Many thanks.

    Roger,

This sounds like the same problem I’m experiencing in the ‘sidebar pages no longer working’ thread, but my hosting company claimed it’s nothing to do with them. Can you tell me what the server error was so that I can check the same?

    Regards,

    Mark

Hi Mark, I have been out for a while today and have only just had chance to reply sorry about that.

I use FREEOLA for my web hosting. They have upgraded some of the servers they use over the last few days and there were some settings (at their end) that were incorrect for my site according to them.

The site that had a problem is now functioning 100%. Sadly I am on the phone to them again now as I have just found out another one of my WordPress sites is not working properly I keep getting the dreaded error 500.

The website that I posted about in the first place (which is now working 100% spot on) has the latest version of WordPress and Jetpack so it seems both the latest versions of WordPress and Jetpack are actually working fine.

I hope you manage to get yours up and running very soon.

    Regards,
    Roger

We use Freeola too, and would you believe everything’s magically fixed itself! Not happy that they lied to us yesterday but am pleased that we’re back online. Thanks for the help.

No problem at all. Glad it’s back up and running. Best of luck.
