• Hi

I have just discovered that all my older posts are showing ALL apostrophe as question marks. Why on earth would that be?

In options I am set up as utf-8

In admin/manage the posts themselves also show as ? does this mean I have to manually change very single apostrophe in every single post?

    Thanks
    Karl

  • Has the encoding ever been changed?
Did you move your database (like backup and importing in a new location)?
It seems to be a MySQL bug.

I used the plugin included with the download to backup, nothing else

I will delete db and try again.

    Thanks

When I tried to validate it, the validator gave errors relating to unreadable bytes, starting on line 9, which seems to be the WordPress stats tag.

When I set the validator to “pretend” the encoding is ISO-8859-1 is can validate, but obviously it’s fully of errors because most of it seems to be in utf-8.

Please post what version of WP you are using, any plugins you are using that could effect any output and tell us if you imported your old posts from somewhere or whatever the story is. And posting a link to one of the wonky pages would be good!

Sorry I can’t be of more help then that at the moment.

Well here is a post that shows my problem: https://www.elyonline.co.uk/archives/2004/07/21/ely-folk-weekend-2004/

These are my plugins but I have disabled them and still get the ?

Getting very depressed here at the though of manully editing each post.

You will loose all of your posts – so better don’t do that ??

You never really gave a straitforward answer to my question: has the database ever exported/imported and/or moved? If the answer is yes – it’s a MySQL bug that kicks in whenever you export/import.
You may want to try this fix:

    Next question.

Yes I exported the database and then imported it back.

I have added that fix mentioned in the post.

My question is: Does this mean I have to manually change every accented character that has changed to a ?.

If so that seems strange there was no mention of this in the upgrade on when you download a backup using the included back-up script.

    Thanks anyway
    Karl
