Old Dude Says Make Life Easier:
    Current Situation Add Event
    1. Fill in the basics
    2. Add a location
a Type the location name into the name box and hope the search function will find a match in the location table. If you are lucky a match will be found. If you are not no location will be found even if you know it is in the location table. Reason why > The name must be spelled exactly like in the location table to get a match.

    EASIER WAY
    0. Stop inputting locations into the location table from here. Make the user do it right by using the Add Location form so they can look at the locations before inputting one that has this kind of error State Colorado on same location 1 and State CO on same location 1 which makes two separate locations in the table to choose from when linking up the add event to the location.
    1. Input the basics
    2. Add a Location
Either click a link or click in the location name box to activate viewing the locations table.
    Find your location
    Check the Select me box
The programming slams the information for all the required input on the location part of the add event form into the correct boxes
    3. Save Draft or Publish
    4. DONE Easy Peasy

At least with my method, you don’t have to type anything and endure mind numbing trials to get the location linked into the event. So when you do a page of events by location all the events are in the correct location.

Old Dude requests that you at least think about this approach.
Old Dude started working computers when a DEC 1170 or IBM 370 main frame were state of the art and programming was done with punch cards. Been doing user interface improvement a long time.

This group stopped using the booking function on EM and are doing the bookings thru comments and replies and the sponsors are writing the people down.

I am assuming the bookings will yield a report of signups to an event if the bookings are used. Would this be true?

April, that is somewhat similar to my approach. I am setting up for clubs and restaurants that offer live music. I created two new user roles – Venue Manager – and – Musician.
A Venue Manager can add and edit multiple locations. For example they own more than one restaurant. They can also create and manage all capabilities for Events at their locations. After all it’s their place.

A Musician can create an Event (their performance date) but cannot create a Location. I’ve seen enough of them make up their own casual names for places they play. So Location has to exist first.

This way the Venue Manager can decide if they want to control the appearance of an Event, or leave that obligation to the Musician once they have a confirmed date. That will vary with every location depending on the wishes of the Manager.

IMO, any user interface only works if the people using it agree to how it is configured, and if they feel like it that day.

@aprilschmitt27, thank you for your kind words. I really appreciate that.

@flyfisher842, if you have any questions about the OpenStreetMap plugin, please watch your choice of words. I am the developer of that plugin.

@charliear, hehehehe. I agree. A user interface can never fully be perfect for everyone. ??

@charliear Your last comment about the users agreeing is right on. My group have a lot of Old Dudes like me and they hate logins etc. Getting to simple has lots of moving parts.

@duisterdenhaag I did not mean to offend you by my suggestion. EM has a lot of settings to adjust and it is easy to miss one like the drop down which makes the whole process much easier. I am 76 years old and really did what I said I did. Started on the internet in 1999 when it was only 10 years old, AOL was the primary isp and provided an html editor to build websites. Compared to those days WordPress is like a Ferrari. It has been an interesting ride.

Again thank you for mentioning the drop down or I would still be struggling with the process that happens when the drop down is not used. And to you and all the plugin developers KUDOS because doing free development work is not easy.
