Major Glitch with Attachments

  • There is a major glich rendering image uploads completely unusable. If you care for having your blog search engine optimized (talking about on site SEO) and have your image uploads linked to a page, it is impossible to achieve due to the glitch in the script.

    If you set your Options >> Permalinks to Default, it will work. You can upload an image and have its thumbnail linked to a page, in which case the Send To Editor option will link it to a page with the end similar to this one:

    /?attachment_id=6

    If however you choosed to have your URLs contain your title for keyword relevancy – such as in my case, I chose Options >> Permalink >> Custom and I entered /%category%/%postname% to define it – in this case, after you have uploaded your image and chose to have the thumbnail linked to the page, WP will generate the link that points to a non existent page. The url that Send To Editor button creates contains the title of an image and what not – overall useless cause it simply links to a non existent page.

    If you go to edit that bad link, WP will recerse it as you hit SAVE back to that useless link that doesn’t work (404 error as a result).

    Is this anything that’s going to get fixed soon so the search engine friendly link it generates actually works and opens a page with image as it’s supposed to? I’m a first time user and I’m definitely not impressed. I have seen bad scripts in my life, but I’ve never expected so many problems right from the first minute of use…

    Ran a quick test and I think I see what you’re saying.
    Permalink settings are set Custom: /%category%/%postname%

    Browse for image, Upload, and choose settings
    “thumbnail” and “link to page” then view that post

    The thumbnail shows but when you click on the thumbnail it goes to this url
    https://example.com/general/tester/meedit1png/ which shows as a 404 page

    So, it forgets the period…..but even if you add the period manually and refresh the page, you get a 404….

    Using wordpress 2.2.1

    I did some research on your behalf.

    It seems there are many issues with %category%/%postname% as a custom permalink.

    You guys must have all read the same SEO newsletter. ??

    In fact, I couldn’t replicate this issue with any Permalink structures except that one.

    I have not read any newsletters. I custom build my own sites to match SEO crireria as I see them.

    you’re totally correct. this is exactly what I’m talking about. Now imagine you are the first time user and you see all of these problems, absolutely nothing working… First thing that gets in your mind is – what’s next? Is this the most bug-stuffed script to ever exist? Where does it end? And subsequently – does it make any sense to even try to use it seeing that I will just spend my time trying to make it work but it never will…

    Still curious – is this going to get fixed? Is there a way to stop the script from forcing its own edits upon mine? I could manually adjust my posts, but it’s all useless cause this darn script sets it back to non working ones… Any hacks to block that?

    I understand that you’re upset. I’ll also concede that open source and volunteer software isn’t the solution for everyone. But I think you’ve made the point that you’re upset.

    I think that ticket pretty much has it covered as far as the broken attachment link goes. I don’t think I have anything to add to it. The thing is, though that it doesn’t offer any solution other than leaving out the %category% tag in the permalink settings. So what’s a guy supposed to do?
