• The .maintenance file is almost always left behind on plugin updates, even for updating a single plugin. I have to do ssh to delete the file manually after every plugin updates.

It used to be properly deleted before.

The problem happen after I was updating a plugin and there’s error causing the plugin not updated. I reinstall the plugin to correct the issue.
Also I was trying to install varnish and w3 total cache but failed. But those plugin can be removed.

Are there any way to fix this (have the .maintenance remove after plugin updates) or to check the problem ?

  • This sounds like a problem that is being caused by one of your plugins or your theme. Any time I have encountered such a problem it was one of those two things. Unfortunately, I do have not been able to find a plugin that will double check to be sure the file is deleted and I have been working as a Freelance WordPress Developer for ten years.

Maybe someone else can provide better feedback than this. If you find a plugin to accomplish this please do share!

delete the file .maintenance in your site root to come out of maintenance mode.

@sterndata He said he did that and is asking if there is a plugin to double check and be sure the site is being updated and if it is not delete that file automatically.

    1) Just because he said he did doesn’t mean another look isn’t worthwile.

    2) A “default” .maintenance file should expire in 10 minutes

    3) If a file *is* getting left behind, something else is going on. So, if this is true

The .maintenance file is almost always left behind on plugin updates, even for updating a single plugin. I have to do ssh to delete the file manually after every plugin updates.

then it’s time to do the big ugly procedure:
disable all plugins and set the theme to twentysixteen. Does the problem still occur?

    4) if there’s not plugin conflict, perhaps a system thing? How is the site hosted? VPS or shared hosting? If the former, are you using an OS with SELinux enabled? If so, it *might* be blocking file deletion.

@strerndata, I think that your first two points are precisely the reason he posted this… he wants a plugin that will act as a failsafe so that he can click a button to delete the file within wp-admin or have it deleted automatically before the 10-minute limit if the server is able to detect that no updates are being done.

Davood: since you seem to have a handle on this, I will withdraw from the conversation.

@sterndata, that was not my intent. I actually would love something like this as well.

    Thanks guys, you both help.

I’m still interested to know If there’s any other idea on how to solve this without having to remove all plugins and goes to standard themes, because it happened on a production site.

I see that on update process, there is a “Enabling Maintenance mode…”

But I don’t see any “Disable Maintenance mode”. Are there any such thing on wordpress ?

    Following is the update process:

    ———
The update process is starting. This process may take a while on some hosts, so please be patient.

    Enabling Maintenance mode…

Updating Plugin WP External Links (1/1)

WP External Links updated successfully. Show Details

Some of your translations need updating. Sit tight for a few more seconds while we update them as well.

    Updating translations …
    Translation updated successfully.

    All updates have been completed.
    ———-

@domi2015 makes a valid point there @sterndata. There is no “Disabling maintenance mode” message that comes up at the end of the update process.

That said, @dom2015, I am sure this is not the reason for the file sticking around.

All updates have been completed is all there is. There is no Disabling Maintenance mode.
