Maintenance Mode ands Unable to Update

I just installed a fresh version of 5.2.3 on my site. There were no errors during the installation. However, whenever I try to update the default theme or any of the plugins, it says “Update Failed” with no explanation.

Now my site says “Scheduled Mainenance” and does not come up. There is no .maintenance file in my wordpress folder.

Ideas?
