Hi Mark, could you clarify where you made the changes to Sela? I’m not seeing a child theme or custom CSS plugin, but maybe I’m just missing it!

To troubleshoot this issue and figure out where that space is coming from, I’d normally hide pieces of your custom/child-theme CSS in a browser inspector, but I’m unable to do that here, which is why I’m asking. Let me know!

And if you’re not sure what I mean, just a heads-up that the best way to make changes to a theme is to use a child theme, so your tweaks won’t be overwritten when updating the theme. Here are some guides in case you haven’t made one before:

If you’ve made edits to any of the theme files directly, they’ll be overwritten the next time you update Sela.

If you only need CSS tweaks, you can use a custom CSS plugin instead of a child theme.

The Jetpack plugin has a good one – just activate the Custom CSS module. You’ll then add your custom CSS in the new stylesheet editor that’ll appear in your dashboard, under Appearance > Edit CSS.

You could also install a standalone custom CSS plugin instead of Jetpack.

First time using WordPress, one of my clients wanted to switch to it, so here we are. Was completely unaware of a Child_Them or Custom CSS Plugin.

So I have been updating the CSS directly in the theme.

So, with that information, what’s the best way to move forward?

Just looked at Jetpack plugin, however I’m unable to activate it because this is currently just the test site, once the client has everything the way she want’s it I’m going to move it over to the www. domain.

I just learn that there is no easy way of doing this so I’m going to have to install wordpress over on the domain and then clone the DB and theme files over. Oh the Joys of web development.

I’m guessing once I get that done I can then activate this plugin, but at that point it may be too late. So, I’m going to make sure we don’t upgrade the theme, plus I’ll keep backups as a just in case the client does upgrade it.

Or, do you all have a better way of moving a site to a different domain?

You could install a standalone custom CSS plugin instead of Jetpack, like one of the ones here:

That will let you add your custom CSS so that it won’t be overwritten when you update the theme.

Or if you go the child theme route, you don’t need a plugin at all.

Once you have either set up, you would copy your modified CSS styles into the style.css file in the child theme or into your custom CSS editor. Then you would make a backup of your full theme folder on your hard drive, and then reinstall a fresh copy of the theme.

p.s. don’t copy the entire stylesheet from the original theme, only the styles you want to override.
