MailPoet Error: Unable to connect to the database

I did an upgrade to Mailpoet 3 (3.8.3) today – and suddenly now am getting the following error:
MailPoet Error: Unable to connect to the database (the database is unable to open a file or folder), the connection is likely not configured correctly. Please read our Knowledge Base article for steps how to resolve it.
I found this KB article. I tried option 1 and that didn’t help. I’m on a shared hosting plan so Option 2 is not available.

I tried deactivating/reactivating with no luck. I even removed the plug in and tried to install version 3.8.1 but got the same error.
I need to send a newsletter but am unable to.
