Hello!

I just created a twenty eleven child theme for my wordpress blog. I copied all of the files from twenty eleven and renamed it. After I uploaded the theme, I received an fatal error message and cannot visit my blog or login into wordpress.

This is the fatal error:

Fatal error: Cannot redeclare twentyeleven_excerpt_length() (previously declared in /home/wlynch3/wesleyeatsphotos.com/wp-content/themes/1stchildtheme/functions.php:361) in /home/wlynch3/wesleyeatsphotos.com/wp-content/themes/twentyeleven/functions.php on line 363

Can anyone please help me? I have no idea what to do to get rid of this error. I have been told by wordpress support to login into my server via FTP (I use dreamhost) and rename the twentyeleven folder. However, because I’m not familiar with FTP, I’ve been solely working on www.remarpro.com (via my domain) and there is no twentyeleven folder.

The best way to make changes like this to a theme is to use a child theme, so your tweaks won’t be overwritten when updating the theme. Here are some guides in case you haven’t made one before:

do not copy the full functions.php or the content of functions.php from the parent theme into the child theme.

Unfortunately, this is my first time creating a child theme and did not know that. I wasn’t sure what files to insert into the child theme folder.

I was told to try solving the issue via FTP but I have no idea what to do when it comes to that. Do you have any suggestions?
