Mac User borks .htaccess
-
I was just trying to use a hack to allow for printer friendly articles from lester chan, and it required .htaccess alteration. Needless to say, I was careless with doing it, and screwed it up. Not sure how, but did.
This is a quick if this happens to you tutorial if you are on a Mac, using OS X.
This is all based on the assumption that you have a back up of your site, either on your HD, or some other media.
First, make sure you have cyberduck, an ftp client, it allows for showing files that start with “.” -you may need to enable the feature in preferences, quit, and restart the app.
Meanwile, you’ll need an app like tinker tools, which among other things, allows to show hidden files.
Open up your backup file, locate the .htaccess file, and remove the “.” I could not get the the ftp client to “see” the file any other way.
Delete the borked .htaccess file on your server, upload the backup, and rename.
Easy enough, however, some may not be familiar with hidden files, and how to “see” them.
Hope this helps someone avoid a pannick, and let it be a lesson to keep a backup handy.
Carry on…
Just to add, both cyberduck and tinker tools are freeware, and worth keeping around in your utilities folder.
