The uncategorized category was introduced in 3.3 because of high demand. No worries, your products aren’t duplicated. The new uncategorized category cannot be deleted but once all products are assigned to a category, the new uncategorized category will be hidden.

You also can set a new default category within the WP Admin under Products > Categories and after hovering over the preferred default.

Mass deleting products in a specific category doesn’t sound like a common need, doubt it has a place in the core plugin.

Alternatively, you could run a custom query or look for a plugin that claims to do this.

One thing I encounter, is that when I select multiple products to change the category (out of uncategorized), you can set the new category, however, you cannot UNCHECK the “uncategorized” option because it isn’t shown as visibly selected. Each individual product can uncheck it via “quick edit” for each item, but not as a whole group or multiple selection using the bulk option “edit”. Ideas on how to do this? I’d think changing or deselecting the uncategorized category should be a pretty simple task, but we don’t have the option to do so.

I have the same problem for so long time and trying to find an answer so I am following this topic.

For the developers it is good to know that when importing from a feed a lot of times products will go to uncategorized category and also other category or categories. Would be nice to get these duplicates out which is bad for seo.
