m3u won’t play!

The m3u file contains a single link to an MP3 file. If you copy that link into your browser’s address bar, it will tell you that the file isn’t there….

Man, am I an idiot today! I should have known that the m3u relies on the underlying mp3! Duh!

Okay, I’ve uploaded the mp3 and corresponding m3u files to my DreamHost server through WP’s Upload. I then link to the m3u file from my Downloads page https://www.anditgoes.com/?page_id=15
The m3u still won’t play. I get the following error message in Windows Media Player..

“Windows Media Player cannot play the file. If the file is on another computer, verify that you are connected to the network. If you typed a path, verify that it is correct. If the problem persists, the server might not be available.”

However, when I change the link to point directly to the mp3, it plays.
Any advice?

Uhm link to the MP3 file directly maybe?

Well, I want to link to the m3u to allow folks to listen to songs before they decide to take the time to download, since an mp3 file is much larger than an m3u.
There will also be songs by new artists who will only permit me to offer streaming versions of their songs on the site.
I have a fast internet connection and a fast computer, but not everyone has that.

I hate to be picky but I don’t want to use an image link to the m3u, as instructed in the link you provided. Although I do appreciate your help. Besides, there’s no difference between using a text link and an image link to play the m3u.

I’ve done this on my previous non-WordPress site and I had no problem. Basically creating the mp3, saving it as an m3u file in a text editor, uploading both to the server, then providing a text link to the m3u on my Web page.

I read somewhere in these forums about uploading to the server in binary? Not sure if that’s relevant.

By the way, I’ve already added the proper file extensions in the Options/Misc. page, so it’s not that.

I suspect the mp3 itself is corrupted or was corrupted upon upload.The link works, the mp3 does not.

I take that back, the link is still bad:

change your link to:
[audio src="https://www.anditgoes.com/wp-content/honour_society_tides.mp3" /]

That’s confusing because when I change the link to point to the mp3 itself, it plays in my default player just fine.
The m3u just refuses to be a good boy and do what it’s told.
I’ve tried several different mp3/m3u files of various songs and it still won’t work. These same songs worked on my last site just fine.
I’ll keep cracking at it. I don’t think it’s the server. I’m hosted by DreamHost and they’re awesome.

For some reasons beyond my expertise, I have similar problems with m3u files. I want my viewers to have a choice between streaming (m3u) and download (mp3). Download works fine (right click save), but m3u files just open in a new window and display the url to the mp3 as text.

I just don’t understand this at all.

I found out it only works in IE and NOT in Firefox!
