• So I’ve notice (and it’s getting more frequent, it seems) that I’m getting a lot of 404 errors on pages. The path looks like it’s an additional 5-alphanumeric character directly after the domain – for examples:
    ?/UiMoZ?/galleries?/vx-holden-commodore?/
    ?/YdTYZ?/wp-content?/uploads?/2014?/12?/1J4C6294.jpg?
    /VfWRZ?/LjZUZ?/NnpQZ?/YYKRZ?/galleries?/mk2-ford-escort-rs2000?/
    ?/YKLLZ?/galleries?/bl5-subaru-legacy-gt

I can’t figure out what it is. Has anyone got a similar problem? Is it plugin related?

  • If you look at the server log files, who is the referrer in the entries that have those 404 errors?

Also you can track what the user was doing before that entry to see if there is something common going on.

Some of the redirects are from Baidu spider and Google bot. However I experienced receiving a 404 myself, from trying to retrieve an admin page. Reloading the page again worked.

If you’re getting sporadic 404 issues, then I’d ask your host to look into it. Any time I get sporadic issues, I look at the server itself as the problem. Code should either work or not work, and if a page is there and then it isn’t and then it’s there again, I’d suspect the server is having problems.

But that doesn’t explain the 404s you’re getting from the weird URLs.

Unless your site is counting on visitors from China, I’d ban Baidu. I’ve found their spiders can cause a lot of problems and I generally ban them since they just create traffic I don’t want.
