Lost my share count on moving blog to https

Hi there!

First some background on where your Share Counts are stored: These are actually not stored by Shareaholic, but rather it is the third party social networks (Facebook, Pinterest, etc) that keep track of these numbers. Shareaholic then retrieves the numbers for you when you look at your website.

Unfortunately when you switch to HTTPS, the third party social networks technically considers the pages on your site to be new pages. Instead of a page that looks like:

https://www.something.com/article

It now looks like:

https://www.something.com/article

Pinterest, Facebook, etc consider this to be a different page.

This is a common negative impact to switching to HTTPS. We don’t have a solution for you right now, however we ARE planning a product for the near future to “combine” share counts if you end up changing your pages or implementing HTTPS. Keep an eye out for this new product in the next 1-2 months!

For the Pingdom scores, I’m not immediately sure what might be causing this, but you could try the steps outlined in this help article:

As additional background, we fetch share counts directly from the social networks (using their APIs) in order to provide you with the most accurate counts available. This also ensures that if your URLs are shared via other means (ex. reshared directly on the social networks) that your content gets credit for all those shares.

As @shareaholicgreg mentioned, we have a feature coming soon that will help you carry over all your share counts when you update your URL structure (including http => https).

@dogwithblog we have some good news! We have released a brand new Share Count Recovery feature that recovers any ‘missing’ shares that may have been lost in a http to https or domain name change.

Once active, Shareaholic will begin to fetch share counts for both URL’s, add them together and display the combined total. Voilà – all your hard work and social proof will, again, be fully accounted for!
