• So I’ve read about the change regarding MS Word files imported (or not) but I have a further problem.

The files from Word seem to come in OK the first time, and they save and show as formatted.

However, if you try to edit them even ONCE, then all formatting is lost and all text runs together. You lose even line breaks, returns, all text formatting, etc. It is a nightmare.

I run a magazine and routinely bring in 1000-4000 word files. After they are published I often have to make small changes when authors chg mind, or find typo, or whatever.

I cannot do this in WordPress editor because I lose all formatting as above.

    Please help.

  • Try disabling all your plugins to see if issue is resolved.

Again, MS Word is for print, not web publishing. If you can’t fix this, you’ll need to make changes in the original word file, delete the entire contents of the post, and then copy and paste from word.

Thanks. Will try disabling all plugins.

However, since WordPress formerly maintained all formatting once a file was imported and saved, that is, no matter how many times one re-edited the file, this seems to be a clear WP flaw making the program much less useful than previously. Note also that the WordPress.com forums are filled with similar reports of this kind of error since the March (I think) update.

Also note that I have tried importing in DOCX, DOC, RTF, PDF formats and all of these have the same issue. The file will come into WP fine and save fine, just so long as you don’t re-enter the edit mode in WP. If you do re-enter the edit mode, all formatting is lost.

I have NOT tried plain text because I assume plain text limits formatting (ital, bold, em space, etc) and thus would not be useful for any complex text.

Disabling plugins has no effect on the problem.

I deleted your duplicate topic: please do not post the same problem multiple times.

Repeating my reply from that other topic.

I use that feature in WordPress 3.9.1 every week. This week twice and it works. Which doesn’t help you but you will need to troubleshoot. ??

Have you tried deactivating all of your plugins, switch to the Twenty Fourteen theme, clear your cache and cookies and tried again? Can you provide a link to your site?

I’m sorry about the 2nd thread, but this one was marked CLOSED, so I rephrased and started new one. I have deactivated all plugins and changed to 2014 theme (and others) and have had same problem.

    I don’t run a WP cache (maybe I should?).

Today I reinstalled 3.9.1 and I do not seem to have the problem, but haven’t had a chance to mess with enough to be sure.

Thanks for your help with this issue.
