• Hi there, a programmer colleague who hosts a few sites offered to host me for free for the first year. However, in trying to move my site from WordPress.com, he said exporting wasn’t working and so he recreated everything into the new site using WordPress. I had not had a LOT of followers (36) but I lost all of them and my comments (which some were important to me!). The site does not redirect and the old site shows up in Google search with 404 errors. Should we try to export again or would this mess up search more? (I am a noob at this, obviously). If we had exported correctly, would the followers and comments have carried over? Can we resolve this? Should I just try to set up a redirect? Please help! :/

  • You need to ask the WordPress.COM support team to move your subscribers – post on their forums and include your new and old site info. You must also first have JetPack set up and activated on your new site.

Ask them about the comment question as well.

Thanks, WPyogi — You know, I’m wondering if I should just move back over to WordPress.com. I really liked the community aspect of it, and honestly, since I’m not selling anything (and I’m not a developer), I don’t see much of a benefit of being on .org. I wonder how hard it would be to switch back? Any idea? Thank you, again.

If you haven’t deleted your site there you should be able to change the nameservers back. If you have deleted it, see:

They’ll likely be able to give you better advice on this, though :).

You’re right that a self-hosted site won’t have the same community – as www.remarpro.com sites are totally separate from each other.

Thanks, WPyogi — yes, I didn’t realize this difference! I think it would just be better for me to move back for now. It’s been fun playing around with the plugins, but I miss the community.
