For some reason, which I simply cannot explain, I seemed to have lost the ability to use <br /> within my posts.

wp version 2.0.4 is converting all my br tags into empty p tags, which is throwing my validation completely out of wack.

Can someone please offer some troubleshooting tips? I’m not running rich text editor. And the only plugins I’ve installed prior to tonight is Corrector, which I deactivated to troubleshoot and the problem still persists.

I installed other plugins tonight, but they are not responsible for the stripping of br tags, as this was occuring last week. Tonight its really irritating me.

And no, I do not copy and paste from MS word. I use a txt file to copy and paste information into my editor.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks
    Kate

  • Have you changed your theme or css recently?
Have you un-checked “WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically” in Options > Writing?

Also, test out a post using the <pre> tag and see if that keeps the <br> functionality

    Hi phuckd,

    Thanks for helping me out.

I am the controlling Admin for my blog, but I never post under that name. I established my own new user name and gave it the highest ranking, which is editor. I cannot turn off rich text editor from the user panel but…

When I first installed WP I turned off WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically in Options>> Writing and its been that way for months.

    To answer your queries…

No. No change to theme but yes to css, but I cannot understand how changing my css will delete BR and replace with P. That doesn’t make sense when CSS is styling, and not outputing of HTML.

I used my pre and code tonight, and I just did as you suggested inserted BR within PRE and it was stripped clean and empty P’s inserted.

I posted under Admin, to see if I lost the BR functionality there, and yep, I’ve lost it. It’s a bit mind-boggling to be sure.

I guess the next step is to deactivate ALL plugins and troubleshoot from there.

Okay – I deactivated ALL plugins, with the exception of Spam Karma and BB and Askimet and did a hard refresh.

My BR tags are still being stripped from my posts and replaced with empty P tags.

Does anyone know why this is occuring? I’ve never used the RTE and I don’t intend to.

Any help would be greatly received.

    Thank you.

    agreed

can you check with your host if they have upgraded your php or if they have applied any new patches recently – eg the hardened patch – this does strip some tags in both rich & plain text editors as a security measure

Update: I have received an email from my hosting company advising that there’s been no recent changes server side.

So I’m now throwing this open to the Moderators. Can someone, please, please, tell me why my BR tags are being stripped from my posts and empty P tags inserted?

Surely someone – Moshu? HandySolo? Kaf? V? Spencerp? MichaelH? – out there has an answer?

    Resolution:

I read in another thread, which was started AFTER MINE but gained more attention (I saw your footprints there, Spencerp ?? ) because it was NEW [soooo not impressed], where another member was also having problems with BR tag being stripped from his posts and P tags inserted.

It was suggested in that thread [grrrr] that commenting out ‘the_content’ ‘wpautop’ in the default filters will tackle the issue.

So, for the invisible person who is reading this [Hi, neighbour], you can trace the resolution here.

    It worked for me.
