Lost access to network site

Hi… I have a long-standing network of three sites, recently updated to WordPress 3.8.
Now I can no longer get to my network site (where I can install plug-ins, themes etc.) The ‘My sites’ list only shows the sub-sites, not the network site itself.
If I try and get to it with https://mydomain.com/wp-admin (omitting the sub-domain) I get a screen with
You attempted to access the “mydomain site” dashboard, but you do not currently have privileges on this site. If you believe you should be able to access the “mydomain site” dashboard, please contact your network administrator.

(list of my sub-sites)Confession: I have been having a clean-up and noted quite a lot of stuff on the network site, which was never used. I only used that site to do admin, like installing plug-ins, so I deleted the stuff. I may have deleted the network site itself – if that is possible? And if so, how to I regain access?
Any help will be much appreciated.
