• I’ve already tried the wordpress-to-wordpress plugin and it gives me an .sql file that won’t import into my new wp.com blog. It asks for a WXR file, which I can’t seem to make.

I’ve searched the support db and keep on coming up with time consuming dead ends.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I’ll be losing my domain name on Friday.

    Thanks!

  • Sorry, you need to upgrade your blog to 2.1 alpha in order to create WXR files. Upgrading is not recommended for novice users, but if you are desperate, you can try. (Sorry Moshu, it sounds like this guy is desperate.)

If you have a copy of your WordPress directory and a complete SQL backup (in a .sql) file me or another WordPress guru can plug the SQL into a WordPress 2.1 test blog and give you the WXR file. Let me know what your opinions are.

@dlavrinc – install the plugin I linked to Jeremy above.

From old blog, do an Export (Manage -> WP Export) and save the resulting WXR.

Go to new WP.COM blog and import (Manage -> Import, choose WordPress) the WXR file.

Alright, thanks for the relief Handy! I wasn’t aware of that plugin.

Handy – I already tried that plug in and that’s where I got the .sql file from. It won’t export a WXR file and I’m not sure why.

And BTW, I don’t have the option of Manage – > WP Export.
All I have is a “Backup” that saves the file in .sql format.

then you didn’t use the plugin. ’cause it don’t generate a SQL file, that’s a different plugin.

Visit the site (link above) and make sure you’ve read the installation instructions. That will get you WP Export on your Manage menu. I promise. I’m looking at it right now on my own blog. Honest.

Senor Solo – Got the plugin installed and I’ve got the WP Export under manage.

It comes up with an rss feed on the page after I click the “download export file” button, with only maybe 20 posts.

There’s no file to download or save.

Hrmm. What browser are you using? When I click on “Download Export File”, I get a prompt to save the xml file. Is your browser just displaying the file? In which case, you’d just use your File -> Save As menu I suppose.

I’ve used this plugin multiple times now. Moved over 500 posts last weekend in fact.

    (@dlavrinc)

odd. I’m using Firefox and only the first maybe 15-20 posts are showing up, not the 77 or so that I have.

when I save it I get a xhtml file, which doesn’t want to import.

tried it with camino and got a xml file

And when I click “Download Export File” *I* get a FF dialog asking me what I wish to do with wordpress.2006-06-21.xml. I, of course, choose “Save” each time.

I’ve now tried with IE7 RC1, FF 1.5 (linux) and FF 2 beta2. They all do the same thing for me.

Are you sure you’re using the plugin I linked earlier?

I got it going now, thanks for your patience. But wp.com is timing out and not allowing me to upload the few posts that it actually saved.

Looks like I’ll be losing a lot, but, such is the way of the world sometimes.

Thanks again for the help. This is still one of the best communities out there.

Do you have a database dump of the blog you’re moving from? If so, all your posts should still be in the dump (which is basically just a text file you can open and read in notepad for instance….)
