Loop Question: Limiting number of posts per page depending on blog page

    I’m currently using the Loop to display posts from only one or two categories but there are issues. On the homepage, I want it to display only one post per category (homepage displays two categories) and on the other pages of the site it should display the last 10 posts (if there are that many) for that page’s category. I know that if I go to Settings–>Reading, I can set the number of ‘Blog pages show at most’ but it’s universal. I want the homepage to only display the last post. Not all of them. How can I arrange that in my template? Do I use the query_posts command?
