• Hi Guys,

I am looking for a paid/non-paid video plugin for wordpress that will make a full fledged movie gallery for users to browse.

I am not looking to add the movies to the posts, rather have a full section of the site where people can view movies in the video section, comment on them, etc.

Anyone know of anything like this? The only plugins I have been able to find only add the ability to add videos to your blog posts.

PS. I would like to be able to host the video’s locally as well, having a plugin that just displays youtube is not quite what I am looking for.

Thanks in advance for any help!

  • There aren’t many themes in the repository geared towards publishing video content. There are a few free themes out there that are designed with video content in mind like Smashing Magazine’s Smashing Multimedia theme.

There are more options in the commercial theme space, Press75 specializes in video themes.

Most of these themes are going to assume that you are using a third party to host the videos, but I don’t think that hosting them yourself if they are in the right format and you have some kind of flash video player to run them.

I would suggest looking into something like Amazon’s A3 to serve the videos as that would likely cheaper than serving them from your webhost.

Another option for hosting video specifically on WordPress sites is VideoPress, you might find that is a good solution for you.

    Hi,

    Thanks for the response!

I am not sure a theme is what I am looking for, rather I am looking for a media gallery that supports the playing of flv video files. In short, design a section of my site where it would be similar to utube, people can come and look at the database of videos and watch the ones they want.

I am able to add them to my blog posts, but I was looking for a gallery system where I can easily add hundreds in.

So it sounds kind of like you want a plugin, like a NextGen Gallery for video, but I don’t think you’ll find one quite like that. Sounds like a good idea for a plugin though, come on all you developers, get on that ??

I think this is something your would have to accomplish in your theme. If you don’t want to switch your theme, you would have to create a custom page template, or a category template if you manage each of those videos as a post.

Is this page here at all what you are thinking of? Like a photo gallery with thumbnails of the videos, and then you can click on a thumbnail to watch the video and comment on it, not unlike YouTube?

I think any way you slice it, this is going to take some custom development. But you’ll have to decide if it is easier to take a theme that has the look you want and add the video functionality, or if taking a theme with the video functionality built in and tweaking the design would be less trouble.

Yeh, that is getting much closer to what I am looking to do. In theory it would be a plugin as that would be the simplest way I can think of to allow everyone to take advantage without having to build a thousand custom themes.

I am quite new to wordpress, first time I have really worked with it on any real level, but the best example of what I am looking to do is like this addon for Vbulletin – https://www.vbtube.com/

While this addon has about 9000 extra things, it would be awesome to have a plugin that can allow you to add a ton of videos directly to your blog.

In case there are any programmers out there looking at this, I would only be looking for a very simplified version of this which would allow me to stream my .FLV or .MP4 directly from an http link.

Would need to have some categories and a small comment system too hehe ??

Anywhooo, thats what I am looking to do.

Some after thoughts – I am currently using “Stream Video Player” to integrate the viewing of video’s right in my blog posts – So far this is by far the best player I have found.

If we could take this and design a basic category system for it and some comments, I think you could have most of the work done.

PS. I am a long stretch from a coder, so pure speculation ??

Yeah, you want to do these as blog posts in WordPress. Then you have the categories and tags to organize them, and the commenting is built right in.

These don’t have to look and work like blog posts, you could use custom post types or taxonomies to differentiate them from regular blog posts and include different information.

The trick to the gallery is just have thumbnails for the video posts, and using a page or category template to lay them out like YouTube.

Have you checked out WordPress.tv? It is WordPress powered of course and I don’t think it has much in the way of plugins, just a fancy theme that uses custom taxonomies for all the video metadata.

If you don’t have a lot of experience with PHP and WordPress, picking a theme with the functionality you need will save you a ton of headaches, because then you just need to edit the CSS to get it to look the way you want it to.

Unfortunately, it is hard to just drop in a plugin to do this, as any theme would have to be customized to get it to fit right. Or the plugin would have to have a template, and you would have to edit that to fit the theme. If you’ve every monkeyed with integrating an image gallery or shopping cart, it would be the same kind of issues.
