This may not be as useful as you think.

What if someone visits a page, then goes for lunch, leaving the page open on-screen all afternoon?

And even if accurate, how would the data be useful? Is it good that someone takes half an hour to read a page; or is it better if they get the info they want quickly?

You can get some anonymised data for time spent on the site/pages from Google Analytics. Unless you absolutely need to track individual users, GA might suffice.
