• I would like to have small dictionaries on my training site.

For that, I would like to use markdown so the experts need not write html.

I have tried JetPack but that demands a yearly fee after connecting to wordpress.com.

I tried enlighter but that is more for code publishing.

I have seen others that are deprecated, not updated for years.

I would like to have a simple plugin that enables me to write pages in markdown.

As I said in the beginning, my aim is to write word definitions as in a dictionary.

    What do you recommend?

Jetpack is free. There are paid levels, but for what you want, it’s free and it supports markdown. Also, I suspect that Jetpack’s markdown will continue to work when Gutenberg becomes the editor. ??

But when I connect my site to wordpress.com only paid options arise.

Should I not connect my site to wordpress.com?

Just click your way back to your site. You do not need to choose any paid plans.
