WordPress themes (as is WordPress itself) are written in PHP. 1&1 supports WordPress.

Here is a curious question. I noticed when I click on preview on any of the theme templates, they seem to look totally different, the layout looks different and the pictures are gone?

There’s the theme and then there’s content. You are responsible for the content. The theme demos are full of content selected by the developers to make their theme look as good as possible and showcase all of its features.

Yes I understand about the content, but a little confused about the theme pictures and layout. Is there a place where I will replace the pictures with my own ?

I would think there would be pictures there that are in the demo that I would just replace, however they are missing…

Yes, that’s what WordPress is… a content management system. The theme is responsible for displaying your content. Some themes come with demo content so check the readme file that comes with it.
