long delay before download

    I have a WordPress site (currently 6.3.1) that uses the latest Download Monitor (4.8.9) and has been working wonderfully until recently.

    I have two kinds of download links (1) those that point to a file URL (e.g. /matpower/downloads/6.0/matpower6.0.zip) and (2) those that point to a GitHub URL (e.g. https://github.com/MATPOWER/matpower/releases/download/7.0/matpower7.0.zip).

    The second kind have all recently started taking forever to download. These are not huge files (~10 sec for a direct download from GitHub), but when clicking a download link on my site, the little icon spins for almost a minute before the browser shows anything downloading, then it appears to complete instantly. I suspect this delay began to affect my site after a recent update of the plugin, but I’m not certain when it began.

    Disabling other plugins does not seem to make a difference.

    Any suggestions?

    The only changes made to the website in recent months have been occasional upgrades to plugins and to WordPress itself. Unfortunately, I don’t know exactly when (i.e. after which set of updates) the problem began.

    Just curious, was there a change at some point to the way Download Monitor handles externally hosted files? For example, does my WP site now download the file from the external site, THEN send it back to the client’s browser? And did it ever just redirect the browser to download directly from the external site? Just trying to think of possible explanations …

    I just upgraded to Download Monitor 4.8.10 … and it appears the problem is gone.

    I didn’t see anything relevant in the ChangeLog. Any ideas what might have caused this problem … and what might have resolved it?

    I hate when things change (for better or for worse, but especially for worse ??) without a plausible explanation.
