    I tried with the Sporty theme on a test install, but it works here.
    Are you sure you have a medium image in your media library? It uses the medium image size. Could it be that is disabled, or for some reason that size does not exist?

    How in your widget to make so that on the place specified on the picture the team logo, but not her name was displayed? If to set records a miniature, then the miniature is shown also in article, and it looks awfully.

    Hi,
    If you want to have an image on the widget, but not on the single page layout of the theme, you should be able to change the single.php template.
    If you copy that to single-sportsteams.php you should be able to edit that template, and leave the thumbnail out.

    Alternatively, that should also be possible with CSS.:

    body.single-sportsteams .post-thumbnail {
           display: none;
    }
