My wordpress recently was updated to 4.4.1. When I attempted to login after the update, I get the redirect loop error. I’ve tried to access the page through multiple browsers on multiple computers with the same error. Weird thing is, after I get the error, I can go to the site and the dashboard pops up at the top like I’m logged in. I’ve checked the .htaccess file and it’s the standard file that came with the install. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Redders – this solution worked – but i cold only get my service provider to disable those particular rules.

In my control panel, I could only disable the Mod Security for the whole domain…not so sure if that is a good idea.

    Anyway, thanks Redders. good knowledge!

Disabling mod security fixed the issue for me. Since I don’t have access to modify specific rules, I’m working with the hosting company to disable the specific rules at fault.

    Thanks for all the suggestions!

Yep, mod_security was the problem. Disabled rule 214940 so the admin-redirect was solved (seems to be caused by wp-emoji-release.min.js)

Disabling rule 214560 solved 403-errors for our clients.

In our case there was no need to disable 214620.

The issue for me was an error for too many redirects only on my homepage. The solution I found was: go to Settings>Permalinks> then make sure everything is in lowercase.

Thank you to anyone who mentioned this above!

After a conversation with redders887 on Twitter, I reported this to Comodo as a false positive for their ModSecurity ruleset v 1.59 where the error was occurring.

Their ruleset is now updated to 1.60 and after testing WordPress has no redirect issue on /wp-admin/

To all of those that have disabled ModSecurity entirely, as long as your system has updated I would recommend putting ModSecurity back in place.

Happens to me to, I think it happens when I hit Log Out.
Here is the URL I landed on when the browser gave up and reported a redirection loop.
I cannot put it here, so here’s a screenshot:

    It’s basically something like that:
