• Hi,

I had a website built for me by an independent web developer using the Vigor template on WordPress. The developer has mysteriously gone AWOL, so to speak, and has left me with a host of issues with the site. The last contact I had with them, they were trying to intall Twitter/Instagram/Pinterest icons to the top right hand corner of the website and I was told ‘the server would update in 24 hours’ and then the icons would appear. This hasn’t happened, and since then I’ve had difficulty logging into the dashboard, often it can take 15 minutes and while I’m logged in, the pages take ages to refresh and often the website becomes unresponsive, with various messages popping up, such as ‘website unavailable’. I’ve also been left with a white line running across the top of the site with the names of the social media icons bunched together into the right hand corner.

Is this an issue with plug-ins? Is this what’s causing my site to crash?

I am totally new to WP, and so far this has proved frustrating, not only because I’ve been left with an unfinished website, but because they are problems that need fixing.

I would really appreciate some advice. My website address is below –

  • Your load time is in excess of 45 seconds, you have major issues with your website.

I truly feel for you. If I had a dollar for every time I heard that an independent developer had abandoned someone in the middle of a project, I wouldn’t have to work as a freelancer any longer.

First off, you have images that are 9MB or greater, four of them that I can see in a cursory glance. This is going to slow down your load times. Your home page is 33.8 MB in size and is using 124 individual requests before the page can render. It also looks like you are using a huge amount of plugins, but I can’t be completely sure.

You can review a complete breakdown of your waterfall here: https://tools.pingdom.com/fpt/#!/dzU01m/https://sweet-plantain.co.uk/

You score 24 out of 100 for desktop and 16 out of 100 for mobile on the google page speed insights system: https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fsweet-plantain.co.uk%2F&tab=desktop

It also looks like you have connection errors so you might have a problem with the way your DNS is set up.

You certainly have your work cut out for you. I don’t envy you and wish you luck.

    Regards,

    Bob

Thanks for the reply and your input.

I only had issues with the load time before the social media icons were supposedly added on, so I’m guessing this is the predominate reason behind the slow load times?

Any suggestions on how I can get back up and running?

I know this is probably a silly question, but do you have a backup of your system prior to these new changes?

It really is excellent practice to push your development work in stages, backing up everything as you go so you can roll back to your last point if something is totally wonky. I know you said you were new to WP so I am going to make the assumption that this is something that you cannot troubleshoot yourself.

While you had a negative experience with a freelance developer, not all freelance developers are irresponsible. If you are looking for a developer, I might suggest that you try to use https://jobs.wordpress.net/

No, I haven’t backed anything up, it isn’t something I’m familiar with, in respect to web development; nor I did I envisage being in this predicament.

I’m hoping to rectify the issues with the website myself, as I really don’t have the funds to enlist more expert help.
