login fails, sshd log shows reason 13, SSH_DISCONNECT_AUTH_CANCELLED_BY_USER

I can verify that the ssh login to localhost works by doing it from the command line. The ssh key works just great. (My server doesn’t allow passwords with ssh, a key is required.)
But trying to update anything from within wordpress results in a log entry in /var/log/secure indicating that the ssh connection was closed with a status value of 13 which is SSH_DISCONNECT_AUTH_CANCELLED_BY_USER. This indicates that no valid login mechanism was found.
I’ve checked everything I can think of the system and cannot get it to work.
