Login fails although login credentials correct

Our website consistently denies access with valid credentials. The credentials are automatically inserted from Google vault so I’m not typing them wrong. Sometimes it complains that cookies are not enabled even though they are. Yet if I log in via wp-admin it works. Am running latest version. It used to work so am thinking it failed after a WordPress update awhile back. Any ideas? Thanks.
