I’ve tested the \wp-admin login for myself and a couple of users to prove I’m using the correct credentials but every user now gets the Failed Login! response when logging in using the sidebar widget.

I have recently ‘hardened’ the site as it was badly hacked recently but I disabled the ‘Limit Attempts’ plug-in but this had no effect.

In WP=Members I did notice there is a (new) option to use reCaptcha (v2) so I registered with Google, entered the keys in both the reCaptcha plug-in and WP_Members – reCaptcha now works on the \wp-admin page but not he WP_Members sidebar login – it doesn’t appear.

The captcha you added is probably the problem. If you are adding a captcha to the wp-login.php, that adds to WP’s authentication function which WP-Members also relies on. You’re adding a third parameter to be validated that the WP-Members login won’t be passing.

There is a discussion of how you can work around this here. It’s referencing a different plugin, the concept is the same.
