I tried to log in with my usual PW – but couldnt get in. PW reset via Mail is blocked by Wordfence. BUT Wordfence sent me the usual mail that a user (me!) with admin rights logged in at HH:MM. BUT I never get in – Login page is just reloaded.

    What can I do?

    Hi @marinorama

Wordfence may not be involved in this. Your theme or another plugin could be breaking the WordPress login flow.

If Wordfence is involved then your theme or another plugin may generating a conflict with Wordfence.

Have you enabled the Wordfence two factor authentication for your admin account?

Have you enabled the Wordfence Google reCAPTCHA feature, even though it doesn’t appear to be enabled when I look at your login page?

See if you can login when Wordfence is disabled as follows:

    1) Find the Wordfence directory in the file path below and rename the Wordfence directory as below:

    ~/wp-content/plugins/wordfence-disabled

    2) See if you can login to WordPress.

    3) If you can’t login then Wordfence is not involved and you will need to test switching themes manually and manually disabling all other plugins to see what is causing the problem.

    4) If you can login then you need to rename the Wordfence directory again to reactivate Wordfence as below:

    ~/wp-content/plugins/wordfence

    5) At this point you won’t see Wordfence in the WordPress menu. Click the WordPress Dashboard menu item and you will then see the Wordfence main menu item appear.

Send me your Wordfence diagnostics report and I can give you a list of likely plugins that could be breaking Wordfence. Please go to the top of the “Diagnostics” tab on the Wordfence “Tools” page. There will be a “SEND REPORT BY EMAIL” button to send the diagnostics report. Enter wftest [at] wordfence [dot] com as the email and @marinorama as the forum username please.

    Hi,
sent You the report as requested. I restored an FTP backup (with an older WP and Wordfence version) – and I was able to login – AFTER I renamed the Wordfence plugin directory. So it might be an WF issue.
It started after updating WP (which is now back to 5.2.5) and after updating PHP to 7.4 (which I downgraded to 7.2). Maybe there is a reason for that behaviour.
    Best,
    Marinorama

    Hi @marinorama

    Thank you for the update.

Wordfence is fully compatible with all versions of WordPress 5 and all versions of PHP 7 so this is something unique to your website.

    Please carry out the following:

    1) Login to WordPress in your normal internet browser.

    2) Rename the Wordfence plugin directory as follows to its correct name:

    ~/wp-content/plugins/wordfence

Wordfence should already be active on the WordPress Plugins page but activate it if you need to.

    3) Try logging into WordPress in a different internet browser.

    4) If the login fails in the different internet browser then clear all cookies.

    5) You can test to see what is causing the problem by using a maintenance mode plugin. ?You can run the tests on your theme and other plugins and your site visitors will see a maintenance mode page rather than a broken site as you switch themes and deactivate plugins.

We strongly recommend that you create a full working backup of your site file system and database first. It is also a general recommendation from www.remarpro.com to backup your site before installing a new plugin or making other major ?changes.

Install and activate a popular maintenance mode plugin that is compatible with your version of WordPress.

    6) Now switch to the Twenty Nineteen theme that you have installed and deactivate all plugins on the WordPress Plugins page except for Wordfence and the maintenance mode plugin.

    7) Try logging into WordPress in the other different internet browser. If the login is successful then logout. This means that your theme or another plugin is causing the problem.

You can test switching back to your normal theme and activating all other plugins you use one by one until the login fails in the other browser to see what is causing the problem.

In the other browser remember to delete all cookies after you test logging in.
