Login and Password no longer working

It’s not uncommon for updates and plugins to cause problems like this.

Please try the following:

1. Use FTP to access your site
   e.g. https://filezilla-project.org/download.php
2. rename all plugins by putting a ‘0’ in front of each plugin -folder;
   ../wp-content/plugins
3. Check if the access / ‘normal functioning’ has been restored
4. If so: one-by-one, remove the ‘0’, checking every time to see if the problem re-occurs.
5. when the problem re-occurs, you’ve found the source of the problem; Delete and find a similar plugin that works with your site
6. alternatively: FTP:Delete; Then download and install / activate a NEW version of the problematic plugin and see if this works.

Alternatively:
Instead of ftp, use the webaccess dashboard functions provided by the webhost.
This usually is not as versatile and more cumbersome.

I did this through ftp and cpanel…neither worked. I also renamed the entire plugin directory and the themes directory just in case there was an incompatibility with the 2012 theme and some of the plugins…it did not work…I can change my password through myphp and the reset scripts…but new passwords and logins do not let me in either…any other ideas?

Do the other thing… without going for the drastic / risky
Reinstall WP, possibly in combination with deactivating the pugins [see above].

1. download the latest version of WP
2. FTP: make a backup of the ‘broken’ site
3. FTP: UPload the ‘fresh copy’ of WP; Overwrite the existing files [won’t affect content…]
4. refresh the browser
5. check the result [fingers crossed]

W.P. Ginfo: Reinstalling wordpress with all the plugins disabled did not work either. It still will not accept a login and password – no matter what I change the login and passward to. Anyone have any other ideas?

Since I cannot get any solutions to work on getting into my site, I deleted wordpress from my site. I reinstalled it and it installed successfully and gave me a temporary password to use. When I entered it into the login screen it would not let me in. I cannot get into wordpress admin panel to upload my backups. I checked my wp-config and the settings are correct. What now?

It seems your database might be the culprit.
Try the following.

1. Install a ‘clean’ new site ‘next to’ the existing site
2. download a ‘fresh set op WP-files to your PC
3. !!! FTP: Make a BACKUP of ‘wp-config.php’
4. FTP: UPload the files to your site [OVERWRITE]
5. FTP: RENAME ‘wp-config.php’ (e.g. ‘0wp-config.php’)
6. Browser: Go to your site [e.g. ‘www.mydomain.com’ >> the WP 5 minute install will start

IMPORTANT

7. Use THE SAME DATABASE-file, with the same login etc as given by your webhost
8. Enter a DIFFERENT PREFIX [e.g. ‘new_’ the underscore is mandatory]
9. >> a new SITE / database is made ‘next to the old, in the same database file; [without a problem]
10. you now should have a new – good working site –

I did this. It told me my site does not have a wp_config.php and took me through a process to put in the database information to create one. when I keyed in the correct data it gives me this:

Error establishing a database connection
This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can’t contact the database server at localhost. This could mean your host’s database server is down.

Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
Are you sure that you have typed the correct hostname?
Are you sure that the database server is running?

I have keyed in the info from the backup of the config file so that everything matches the database. . . didn’t work, same error.

No matter what I key in to the config file, I get this error.

So, I started over with a clean slate again. This time, I did a 5 minute install through cpanel. It set up a new database automatically. I am still getting the “error establishing database connection.” I am at a total loss here. . . any other suggestions.

Check your database details with your hosts.

I am in cpanel. I have checked and all is correct.

FYI: A MySQL database check says the database is fine. So, it’s not corrupted.

Should I delete all databases and wordpress from my server and do a re-install? Would the new installation create a database that it can connect to? Maybe the old database is not compatible with 3.9.1? Ever since the update to 3.9.1, it has not let me in.

I started with a clean slate again. This time I I got the database to connect. However, it STILL will not take my login and password so I can get into the admin area. No error message. It just tells me unauthorized access after a few times of entering my login and password. I did notice that in myPHPAdmin that my password has changed to something different in the MD5 format…any suggestions?

I am having the same trouble. The login.php appears to do nothing – not even validate the password.

I used installatron to clone the blog and the new one works.

Still investigating to see what has changed in the current one.

spoke too soon – now the second one has stopped working.

all sorted. Looks like a combination of the caching plugin and htaccess from the security plugin.
