Hey there – I tried to install Wordfence Two Factor Authentication. All seemed to go well until I attempted to log back in. I received the message “Your access to this site has been temporarily limited by the site owner” So I uninstalled Wordfence and was helped into the back-end by my Hosting Provider. However, I am still unable to login from the front end. Please help fix this. Thanks!

Hello @janeanesanborn and thanks for reaching out to us!

First lets regain access to your site:

    • Please use FTP/SFTP — or any file manager your web host provides via their administration panel.
    • Look inside the /wp-content/plugins/ directory and rename the wordfence directory to wordfence.bak. This will deactivate Wordfence and allow you to login without the 2FA code.
    • Once you have logged in to your WordPress admin you can name the folder back to wordfence again.
    • Go to your user profile and add 2FA back to your account, making sure to download the backup codes in case of problems in the future.

Then we can start to figure out what might of went wrong. Do you use the standard wp-login/wp-admin pages?

Can you send a diagnostic report to wftest @ wordfence . com? You can find the link to do so at the top of the Wordfence Tools > Diagnostics page. Then click on “Send Report by Email”. Please add your forum username where indicated and respond here after you have sent it.

    Thanks!

Thank you so much for your quick response! I followed your directions and have sent you the diagnostic report. However, when I log out I immediately get the message that access to the site is limited by the site owner. I can still log in as usual though. Thank you for your help!

    Thanks for sending that diagnostic!

I don’t see anything standing out that might cause that issue. The host you’re using is usually pretty good with how IPs work.

I would suggest clearing any sort of plugin cache you might use and also your browser cache.

Another thing to check is your Wordfence > Tools > Live Traffic for your IP. What are the details of why it blocked you?

    Thanks!

I cleared the browser cache. I do not have a plugin cache. When I deactivate JetPack I am able to log in but I still receive the lock out message when I log out. I need JetPack so how do I rectify this problem?

The activity detail from WF only shows that I am blocked.

I sent an image of the wording of the block to wftest.

    Thanks!

When you check your Wordfence > Tools > Live Traffic and see your block there, what are the details listed?

I am wondering if this is an issue that can be resolved with Learning Mode. Its worth a shot at this point. From the Wordfence Dashboard click on Manage WAF. Then you will see Basic Firewall Options > Web Application Firewall Status. Change the option to Learning Mode. Now perform the actions that were causing issues. This will help Wordfence learn that these actions are normal and it will allow them in the future. After you have finished performing the actions, switch the WAF from Learning Mode back to Enabled and Protecting. Now test to see if these actions work correctly.

https://www.wordfence.com/help/firewall/learning-mode/ is an amazing resource for learning more about the WAF and learning mode.

    Lets see how this goes!

    Thanks!

It is a 503 Error Block. I put it WF into learning mode. When I log out I am still getting the message “Your access to this site has been temporarily limited by the site owner” I can get around that by opening in a new tab, however, it bypasses log in and goes straight to the backend as though I did not log out. That seems like a very bad problem.

Let’s check for a setting you might have enabled. To avoid any problems with Jetpack, navigate to Wordfence > Login Security > Settings and make sure thatRequire 2FA for XML-RPC call authentication is set to Skipped and click Save.

Let me know if this helps!

    Thanks!
