It’s not critical for me to have this, but my web site is about my book and I want to provide sample chapters, and I’d feel better if the text could be locked (like ebooks are) so people cannot readily copy it. Is this possible to do on a WordPress web site?

  • Sorry, but you won’t be able to do that with any website, no matter what.

Any text that’s served is sent as plain text. Any on-page things like JavaScript to try and stop people right-clicking or copying won’t work because all someone has to do is look at the source code, and the text is there in plain, easy to read text. You can try to create images out of the text so it can’t be a quick and easy copy, butany OCR program out there will convert that into text in a few seconds anyway.

The biggest thing to do is not be quite so concerned about it. If it’s online, it will be copied and there’s nothing that you can do about it. The trick is to keep what you offer smaller so not much can be copied. you can also look at copyright protection services to search for people that have copied it online.

But remember that no matter what you do, as soon as someone can see the text in pretty much any format, they’ll be able to copy it.

    Thanks Catacaustic,

I kind of thought that might be the case, but there’s no harm in asking. Sorry for taking so long to reply to your response. Work and life have a way of getting in the way of themselves, at least in my world.

    Again, thanks…

    Take care,
