I was in the dashboard of my site today and was notified that I needed to update BPS, which I did. I’m not certain of the connection, but after logging out, I could not return. I get: Error too many redirects. The front of the site is fine.

I tried renaming the plugin via FTP, which did not work. Then I renamed some other security plugins one by one. Nothing worked. I have not tried renaming the plugin folder yet, but I will try it tomorrow when I am back at work.

Is it possible that I need to replace/edit the .htaccess file?

Error too many redirects typically indicates a problem with your root htaccess file or http/https rewriting/redirection – ie you are using https, but are rewriting/redirecting to http, which will cause redirect looping problems. So yes, copy your root htaccess file first and then delete your root htaccess file and see if you can log back in. Then check for any root htaccess file code problems before activating root folder BulletProof Mode again. If you are not sure what to check for then send me your copied root htaccess file so I can take a look at it. Use the Contact form here to send your root htaccess file to us: https://www.ait-pro.com/contact/

Yes. I was able to replace the .htaccess file(s) and get back in.

I did not create this site, but have taken over maintenance for my company. Using FileZilla, I was surprised at the site structure (and confused). The first .htaccess file I could find (even with forcing the server to show hidden files) was in site>web>content. I found another in wp-admin, as I expected.

I will use your contact form to send both of them to you.

Received your htaccess files and everything looks good. The root htaccess file has BRUTE FORCE LOGIN PAGE PROTECTION Custom Code which would not allow you to login to the site if your IP address was not in the range of allowed IP addresses in that code. Other than that everything else looks fine. So what I recommend is that you delete that BRUTE FORCE LOGIN PAGE PROTECTION Custom Code from BPS Custom Code, click the Save Root Custom Code button, go to the Security Modes page, click the Create secure.htaccess File AutoMagic button and activate Root folder BulletProof Mode again. If everything is still ok at this point then whatever caused the original problem can be considered “fixed”.

If the original problem happens again then another possibility is that this host does not allow locking the root htaccess file. You would need to delete the root htaccess file again to get back into the site and then go to the htaccess Core page > htaccess File Editor tab page and click the Turn off AutoLock button and click the Unlock htaccess File button.
