• I have recently taken over the day to day maintenance of a non-profit website. It is a WordPress site hosted by a company. All has been going well until the upgrade to 5.2.4 when we got the “This site is experiencing technical difficulties” message. I was working my way through trying to track down the problem and disabled all the plugins but still no luck. I re-enabled the plugins we used and removed the unused ones then tried to see what else could be causing the issue. However, we can not now log into the WordPress installation at all (we get a 504 gateway message). If we try to just navigate to the homepage we get the technical difficulties message.

My plan is to manually rollback to 5.2.3, which worked fine with our site and see if I can firstly get back into it again and then secondly fix whatever bricks it under 5.2.4 before we head off into the sunny uplands of 5.3. However, before I try that I wanted to make sure not to mess things up further. So I would like guidance on how to
    a) manually backup the site
    b) manually rollback to 5.2.3

I am happy using FTP clients such as Filezilla and I have previously used them to setup a few non-WordPress site but given I am new-ish to this site and have done everything through the WP dashboard I want to make sure I know what I am doing before I start tinkering.

    Any thoughts? Many thanks.

maybe there is a problem with the theme
which themes do you have available in themes folder?

Backups: ask webhosting vendor if there are any built in tools available.

    Thanks for the response Lisa.

Unfortunately I can not remember the name of the theme as I inherited the site & being unable to log in I can not find out but when I can get back in I will see if it is the culprit.

The webhosting vendor have rebuilt the database but I will check out the info on backing up the site on the link.

Are you able to access folders/files in WP Content folder via FTP?
Look in the themes directory for the names of the folders.

I do not have access via FTP currently but I seem to remember the main theme is Fusion, which also includes an editor and a few other things.
