I am the webmaster for a local organization. Up until now, I was able to go into the host and do what needed to be done. I don’t work on the site through the host, but every once in a while there are host specific things to do.

This morning I needed to log in to the host. They are telling me I am out of space and I don’t know why. They changed their log in process and sent an auth code to the owner. I tried to tell them I am the admin, but they would not let me log in.

Here is my question. What I need to do is free up some space. Can I do what I need to do without logging into the web host?

  • Do you still have access to the WordPress backend? If so, look under Tools > Site Health > Info to see which directories are taking up a lot of storage space. If it is the upload directory, you could look under Media in the backend to see which media files you no longer need.

However, I am not sure whether this makes sense. A full storage space should be checked from the hosting. This could also be due to a large database or session or log files that have not been cleaned up. There could be many reasons. I would recommend that you speak to the owner so that you can get access to the hosting again.

Thanks, threadi. This is helpful info.

As it turns out, the message was sent to the owner by mistake. We are not running out of space. However; I still need to get into the host site, and am talking with the owner to see what we can do.

I do have access to the back end, but I get a little paranoid when checking and deleting files in the directory, even though I have the site backed up.
