For the second time I have been locked out by being told “Exceeded the maximum global requests per minute for crawlers or humans.”. Followed by the standard email telling me my IP address has been blocked.

I have gained access using the unlock email system but when I check the blocked IP list in the Firewall Blocked list there is no record of my IP address having been blocked?

If there was I could whitelist it but there seems to be no way to whitelist an IP unless it has already been blocked and is on the list.

Why I am being locked out I have no idea but i would like to find a way to ensure it does not happen again.

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • Hi @adrian33000,

It could that by the time you check the “Blocking” page the IP has automatically been unblocked; what duration did you set for the “How long is an IP address blocked when it breaks a rule” parameter?

The reason why you’re being locked out could be that your Rate Limiting rules are too strict.

Also, can you confirm which option is selected for “How does Wordfence get IPs“?

    Hi

Blocking is set for 1 month so that cannot be the reason why it was unblocked. What is strange is that I had not accessed the backend of the site for maybe 24 hours but the lock-out was because of excessive login attempts? I had only made one? The most strict limit is 5 in one minute?

Wordfence gets IP’s from “Let Wordfence use the most secure method to get visitor IP addresses”. The recommended option.

    Hi @adrianhead1,

Can you confirm that the “Show Wordfence Automatic Blocks” option is enabled on the “Blocking” page?

Have you tried clearing the cache?

Also can you check if there are any errors showing in the browser console?

Hi yes, “Show Wordfence Automatic Blocks” option is enabled. No errors in the browser console or network. Not sure which cache you refer to mine on the computer or somewhere within Wordfence but I really don’t see why cache would result in several attempts to login from my IP when that had never happened and if it had why it did not show up on the blocked IP list.

Maybe it was a fluke and won’t happen again, although it is not the first time it has. I did notice that the IP address had been changed by my internet service provider but whether that was at the same time or some time prior to this I am not sure. I only spotted it because on receiving the email notification it was different to one I was used to seeing. It had changed from 198….. to I think 201…. but it has changed again now to 190…..

I doubt we will find a solution. Let’s wait and hope it does not happen again. If it does I will contact you again

    Thanks

    Hi @adrianhead1,

    Thank you for the update.

I was actually referring to your browser’s cache as a potential cause for the display issue.

Indeed this would be unrelated to several attempts to login from your IP; for which I have no explanation so far.

Let me know if the issue reoccurs.

    Thanks
