• Hi all,

I have asked this before, and hit a stumbling block, but now with the additional features in 3.0 I think the idea I have might be possible.

I am creating a site that lists local parks, together with information as to whether there is parking, toilets, etc etc.

My thinking is that I would create a custom post type for this entitled “parks”

That bit is fine, however I’m not sure what the best way to search or categorise these are. Obviously each park will have a location. My initial feeling was to have all different (UK) counties set up as seperate categories, and then each park can then be added to the corresponding category.

Now I’m thinking that it might be better to set the counties up as taxonomies… i’m just not sure?

Each park would effectively be a post. I’m thinking that custom fields could be set up to add details like toilet facilites, parking, etc. I would also like each park to have a google map of its location and a photo gallery.

If anyone has any suggestions as to the best way to set up a structure for this then I would VERY much appreciate any thoughts. I have been trying to get this off the ground for a while but this is my main stumbling point.

  • I can supply a search widget that works with normal posts and categories. It would have a dropdown to select a County. Choosing a County would populate a second dropdown with a list of Parks. Below that dropdown would be a column of checkboxes for the various features.

You would need to help test the plugin. You can see a similar plugin I provided at alongthelakeshore.com.

Your category structure would look like this:

    County 1
    – Park 1
    – Park 2
    – Park 3

    County 2
    – Park 1 in County 2
    – Park 2 in County 2

    Parking
    Toilets
    Picnic Areas
    Food Vendors

I have sent you an email regarding your search widget.

I would appreciate any further input as to the best way to go about this.
I’m also thinking about custom post templates. I’m assuming this is possible to have, for example, a normal template for my site news, and a customised template for my park info. The park info post template would need to have the layout and coding to pull the custom field data for the park info.

Does this sound like something thats possible

I have sent a copy of the plugin. As I said earlier, it works with normal posts and categories. I have not tried to modify it to work with a custom post type or custom fields. If you need a custom post type and custom fields, it will not work for you.

As it turns out, it would be relatively easy to change the plugin to work with a custom post type.

Custom fields are a different matter. If you can stay with categories, the plugin could still work for you.
