    Hello Wordfence!

While investigating multiple login attempts to my site “blog.4bothmann.de” from IP “2a01:4ff:f0:a8bd::1” I came across the following inconsistency.
Wordfence identifies this address as “Sorry, but no data for that IP or domain was found.” with location “Ashburn, Virginia, United States“.
This is quite strange, since 1.) an IPV6 is always static, and therefore has an owner, and yet a location is output.
Now I found out to whom this address should be assigned.
According to ARIN (https://search.arin.net/rdap/?query=2a01:4ff:f0:a8bd::1) it is the company Hetzner Online GmbH Industriestrasse 25 D-91710 Gunzenhausen Germany.
According to IP2Location (https://www.ip2location.com/demo/2a01:4ff:f0:a8bd::1) as well.

Is there any explanation for this?

    Many thanks, with greetings?J?rg

Hi @joergbothmann, thanks for reaching out.

IP location detection will never be 100% accurate in all cases, but we do update the GeoIP database as often as we can. Having said this, a traceroute6 did reveal one of the last few responses as being spine2.cloud1.ash.hetzner.com where the “ash” may suggest “Ashburn” for the location. WHOIS isn’t necessarily the same as GeoIP location databases, as it shows who owns the IP, but not necessarily where it is located.

As for the lack of further detailed data, our team has confirmed to me that they will look into your observations from this end as we can confirm a lookup with our WHOIS tool currently still can’t find data for that IP.

    Many thanks,
    Peter.
