Hi, I wanted to install wordpress locally and I already have apache and php installed on my pc. Is there a tutorial for doing this manually? I can install wordpress on my web host using fantastico online but i wanted to be able to modify the design. Does anyone have any suggestions for this? Is there a point in installing wordpress with database locally just to work on design stuff and then upload to the live site? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

And are you trying this with wp2.0 only and it’s happening, or is this happening with other versions of wp, and other non-wp pages on your local machine?

I’m not able to get wp2.0+ to work locally at all. Which is fine with me, I’m not going to use wp2.0+ anyway…. There have been several posts regarding that problem too, and of course with search borked totally it’s really hard to find that out, y’know?

Should I try it with an earlier version?

I have the latest full xampp 1.5.1 and I’m able to run wp2.0.1 and also the latest Gallery code.

    Check your installs ?
    Check for any conflicts ?

With the lite version there is no uninstalls..

When I try to log onto localhost, its so slow that the page just doesnt show up at all.

I’m running this version of xampp with wp 1.5.2 and it works fine except for it not recognizing my permalink structure. I had to reboot my pc in order for everything to work correctly.

its rather frustrating as it worked before lol All I get is ‘waiting for localhost. ‘

    Can anyone assist?

All versions, generally should work “out of the box”.

Though, you may need to check both service (Apache and mysql) if they are running properly.

Sometimes there are program conflicts which you either can identify or not.

Once, I could not start mysql as nt-service because of Skype. I was able to identify that.

Now, I have the same problem but could not identify the problem so I start mysql manually through xampp control panel each time.

Ive tried every way and its not connecting to localhost at all.

marginwalker, I know you’ve probably done this (probably several times!), but maybe it won’t hurt to ask the obvious: you’ve changed the httpd.conf file to reflect your particular setup as regards server root and document root, etc. right?

    Well, well ….

I looked a bit further back and you mentioned it was a reinstall. So, it may really be confusion regarding xampp setup as vkaryl suggested.

If you cannot get accross it, I would suggest to start from scratch. It is just easy. All you need to do is to back up your htdocs and the mysql/data folders.

Next, do a fresh install and check that both apache and mysql are running properly.

Then simply copy back the content of htdocs and mysql/data.

    httpd.conf file

    Where would I find this??

    vkaryl

    (@vkaryl)

apachefriends/xampp/apache/conf/ folder…. Be sure to back up the file under another name before you start changing stuff….

What should I change in the file?
